Trying to get pregnant, but am overweight!
Jul 3 2006, 9:33 AM EDT My husband and I are trying to have a baby, however I am deemed to doctors as obese. We are desperate to have a child but my family are concerned that there maybe complications along the way. I've read up on subjects such as gestational diabetes, but I would really love to hear from people who have actually been there and had a baby or are currently pregnant and are in the same position as me. Thank you x 8 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you? |

I've also got PCOS which makes loosing weight even more difficult. It took us 4 years before I got pregnant. Just keep trying and as soon as you get it right, just be extra careful of what you eat and try and keep healthy. You'll be fine. 6 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thank you x"Hello de-ane, I just wanted to let you know that I am considered obese and am currently 29 weeks and 3 days pregnant with our first baby due on Nov. 14th. I am 5 ft. 11in. and weighed 280 lbs. when I got pregnant. I want you to know, however, I had made some serious lifestyle changes and was down to 280 lbs. from 350 lbs. before getting pregnant. At 350 lbs. I had irregular periods, often having two periods per month, which my doctor indicated as a lack of ovulation. I don't have PCOS, but was checked for it, as well as diabetes, and thyroid. All tests came back normal, so I decided to take charge of my health. After losing just 20 lbs. my periods became normal (31 day cycle). I followed the South Beach food guidelines: lots of fibrous fruits and veggies, whole grain carbohydrates and lean protein. I also exercised. I was feeling and looking better than I had in a looong time. When the hubby and I decided to try to conceive, I had a complete physical (Complete Blood Count, TSH, cholesterol and glucose) and my yearly done. All was well. We got pregnant the first month we tried...very lucky and very happy. Although I have gained 30 lbs. back w/ this pregnancy, it is ok. I have kept a lot of my healthy eating habits, even more important now to give my developing baby the nutrition he needs. I won't lie, I have made those trips to Wendy's and Pizza Hut, but they do not make up the whole of my diet. Also, I didn't restrict my caloric intake(to lose weight) during this pregnancy...Pregnancy is not the time to lose weight, but a time to eat appropriately. 300 additional calories are all that are needed during pregnancy...hard to maintain, though ;). Also, try to get an ob/gyn who isn't prejudiced against big people, only concerned with your and your baby's health. My dr. has never made negative comments on my weight. Good medical care from the get go is necessary. All my best to you and good luck TTC! ;) 18 out of 18 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Trying to get pregnant, but am overweight!
May 4 2008, 7:21 PM EDT Hello I am 5'2 and weigh 290lbs. I have been diagnosed with PCOS and I was put on Metformin, and I also did not feel right about is so I stopped using it about a year ago. Me and my husband would love to conceive a child but I don't have periods at all. If anything I have one a year and the doctors say its my weight and if I lose all of this will go away but I cannot get past the 10 pound mark. It is very frustrating I am now going to try a Reproductive Endocrinologist and see if they can help me but I fear they will just tell me to lose weight and it will happen but again losing is hard I have tried everything from Curves, Weight Watchers to Tae Bo and joining Gyms. I also would like advice from anyone with PCOS on how they lost weight. Thank You! Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Trying to get pregnant, but am overweight!
May 5 2008, 11:23 AM EDT For those who have gotten pregnant after trying, I have never had a regular period, it has always been crazy. Is there anything I should say to my doctor to take me seriously and do something for me bacause I am 25 and all I keep hearing is that your young you have lots of time but there is no point of waiting for nothing. I need some help on what to ask for when I go to a new doctor. I have been trying and am desperate to get pregnant. Should I stay on the metformin and try it or put up a front and say aah no give me something directly related to getting pregnant since they dont even know for sure if I have pcos or even if metformin does anything for pcos. :( Can anyone give me some advise? Thanks Do you find this valuable? |

May 31 2008, 9:00 AM EDT "Hi there,I think that we woman, if we really want to conceive before we even try to say we infertile we need to get in shape because regarless of many woman that say that they are over weight or obese and got pregnant that dont mean that most of obese woman have it easy and is usually because of the weight lets all get together and get in shape and you would see how everything change for the positive not in all cases of course but we all need to start living a healthy lifestyle before we even start having a family because if we want to enjoy our children we need to be healthy! 0 out of 2 found this valuable.
