Trying to get pregnant, but am overweight!
Jul 3 2006, 9:33 AM EDT
My husband and I are trying to have a baby, however I am deemed to doctors as obese. We are desperate to have a child but my family are concerned that there maybe complications along the way. I've read up on subjects such as gestational diabetes, but I would really love to hear from people who have actually been there and had a baby or are currently pregnant and are in the same position as me. Thank you x

it depends on just how big you are if you think you can do it i would i'm not exactlly big but i have been and if i was wanting a baby as much as you do back then i would've i would just say be careful and try and do everything a normal skinny model mum would do if she was pregnant but don't exhaust yourself trying to lose weight if you are or do get pregnant cause thats when it becomes bad for your health and your babies.

I've also got PCOS which makes loosing weight even more difficult. It took us 4 years before I got pregnant. Just keep trying and as soon as you get it right, just be extra careful of what you eat and try and keep healthy. You'll be fine. 34 out of 37 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thank you x"Hello de-ane, I just wanted to let you know that I am considered obese and am currently 29 weeks and 3 days pregnant with our first baby due on Nov. 14th. I am 5 ft. 11in. and weighed 280 lbs. when I got pregnant. I want you to know, however, I had made some serious lifestyle changes and was down to 280 lbs. from 350 lbs. before getting pregnant. At 350 lbs. I had irregular periods, often having two periods per month, which my doctor indicated as a lack of ovulation. I don't have PCOS, but was checked for it, as well as diabetes, and thyroid. All tests came back normal, so I decided to take charge of my health. After losing just 20 lbs. my periods became normal (31 day cycle). I followed the South Beach food guidelines: lots of fibrous fruits and veggies, whole grain carbohydrates and lean protein. I also exercised. I was feeling and looking better than I had in a looong time. When the hubby and I decided to try to conceive, I had a complete physical (Complete Blood Count, TSH, cholesterol and glucose) and my yearly done. All was well. We got pregnant the first month we tried...very lucky and very happy. Although I have gained 30 lbs. back w/ this pregnancy, it is ok. I have kept a lot of my healthy eating habits, even more important now to give my developing baby the nutrition he needs. I won't lie, I have made those trips to Wendy's and Pizza Hut, but they do not make up the whole of my diet. Also, I didn't restrict my caloric intake(to lose weight) during this pregnancy...Pregnancy is not the time to lose weight, but a time to eat appropriately. 300 additional calories are all that are needed during pregnancy...hard to maintain, though ;). Also, try to get an ob/gyn who isn't prejudiced against big people, only concerned with your and your baby's health. My dr. has never made negative comments on my weight. Good medical care from the get go is necessary. All my best to you and good luck TTC! ;) 71 out of 72 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hello I am 5'2 and weigh 290lbs. I have been diagnosed with PCOS and I was put on Metformin, and I also did not feel right about is so I stopped using it about a year ago. Me and my husband would love to conceive a child but I don't have periods at all. If anything I have one a year and the doctors say its my weight and if I lose all of this will go away but I cannot get past the 10 pound mark. It is very frustrating I am now going to try a Reproductive Endocrinologist and see if they can help me but I fear they will just tell me to lose weight and it will happen but again losing is hard I have tried everything from Curves, Weight Watchers to Tae Bo and joining Gyms. I also would like advice from anyone with PCOS on how they lost weight. Thank You!

For those who have gotten pregnant after trying, I have never had a regular period, it has always been crazy. Is there anything I should say to my doctor to take me seriously and do something for me bacause I am 25 and all I keep hearing is that your young you have lots of time but there is no point of waiting for nothing. I need some help on what to ask for when I go to a new doctor. I have been trying and am desperate to get pregnant. Should I stay on the metformin and try it or put up a front and say aah no give me something directly related to getting pregnant since they dont even know for sure if I have pcos or even if metformin does anything for pcos.:( Can anyone give me some advise? Thanks 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Hi there,I think that we woman, if we really want to conceive before we even try to say we infertile we need to get in shape because regarless of many woman that say that they are over weight or obese and got pregnant that dont mean that most of obese woman have it easy and is usually because of the weight lets all get together and get in shape and you would see how everything change for the positive not in all cases of course but we all need to start living a healthy lifestyle before we even start having a family because if we want to enjoy our children we need to be healthy! 2 out of 19 found this valuable. Hey everyone. I'm just reading through all the comments/replies and I see that some of them are over a year old. Have any of the women on here had any success getting pregnant? I recently started a thread through my page about trying on get pregnant while not being at medically "desirable" weight. Please feel free to post replies on my thread, thanks for your time!

HI! I have also been reading through these and they are all over a year old...... I am also overweight my doc says to loose weight and it will happen, but it is so easy for them to sit in that office and tell someone that and not be living it themselves. We have been trying for over 2 years with no success, and they wont try any type of fertility methods because of my weight.!

It takes major behavioral and psychological changes that take time. And when time isn't what you have (or want to wait for) then weight loss presents even more of a challenge. Losing weight in order to get pregnant CAN be done...but it's tough. You just have to want that pregnancy more than extra calories and a sedentary lifestyle. Those are the changes I made. I monitored caloric intake, ate healthy food, and exercised to lose fat...and to no big surprised, it worked. There are no magic pills...after all, you want to be HEALTHY, b/c when your body is healthy, your baby's body will be healthy. AND TRUST ME, there is a huge amount of self-discipline that goes into caring for a newborn baby and beyond. Making yourself as healhty as possible is the best start for your baby's life and your own. You can read my earlier posts for the eating plan I followed. I wish you all the best. 8 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

meg & browneyedgirl, I'm in the same boat. this is my 3rd try with weight watchers, I had previously lost 60 lbs with them, but slowly gained it back. I was on BC for about 10 years, and stopped about 10 months ago. when I came of the BC I realized I didn't have regular cycles, my dr. put me on metformin and also suggested losing some weight, other than irregular periods and the weight I don't have other PCOS symptoms. What's been most frustrating for me is that my husband has just easily lost 35lbs and I'm only down 8. so I'm just going to keep trying through the frustration, I'll get there eventually.

Hey Jess- thanks for sharing your situation too. It's good to know that I'm not alone in this. I'm feeling good about my progress. Not only am I doing Curves several times a week my husband and I also invested in an WII Fit. We love it!!! I've lost 3 pounds in one week while doing both. Eating healthier and making good choices and spend time working out. We'll see what happens but at least I know I'm headed in the right direction. :)

16. Trying to get pregnant but am overweight
Sep 2 2008, 8:58 AM EDT
Hey, I am currently over 13stone and trying to lose weight, I got the Wii Fit also and find it very good, especially the step aerobics. I did manage to get pregnant but it was a chemical pregnancy and lost it at just over 4 weeks. Having a healty diet and excercising is important for your health & the babies health, also if you suffer with any back or underactive thyroid like myself, you need to make sure that these are all looked after as your thyroid can go crazy when pregnant, and you may need to take extra medication. Just making small changes to your lifestyle can make a BIG difference.

Thanks for all the advice, luckily I've never been diagnosed with an underactive/overactive thyroid. As for eating habits, we try to eat organically. I'm very picky as to what goes into my body. My weight came came from a diagnoses I got when I was 13, the medicine that helped keep me healthy and alive caused major weight gain. My "natural" body isn't heavy. After seeing a new specialist I'm able to no longer use the steroids/medicines I was on and I've started to regain my life back. I'm feeling a whole lot better. Exercise is the key for me! Pregnancy will happen, it just may take me longer than I would like. :) Good luck to Brecon...

Hi, I know its a late reply but better late than never, I am 31 years old and I am also obese,I am pregnant, I was 260 lbs when I got pregnant ansd I have pcos, (polycystic ovarian syndrome. I didnt go out for much. I used to weigh 306 lbs. I finally decided to change my weight because it was causing major depression which caused me to eat more and gain more and it was a vicious cycle, I got a job first and then I finally had the health insurance to see the doctor and get medicine, He prescribed Fastin (Phentermine) Metformin (Glucophage) and Simvastin. I started taking the coctail of these medicines and lost 66 lbs in 3 months,My weight was 240. It was amazing how I felt after losing that weight, I was full of energy and walking up a flight of stairs didnt hurt me anymore, as a matter of fact I moved in an apartment on the 6th floor and never took the elevator. I felt great. After 15 years of trying to concieve I finally got it, I fount out in July that I am pregnant, and I am now 17 weeks. Its a miracle but also it is from my losing weight. I am concerned about Gastational diabeties but I am being very careful of what I eat, Its simple to think of really, Would a pregnant woman who wants a baby badly smoke crack knowing it would cause horrible effects on the baby? Of course not. and eating is no laughing matter.

thanks Zaynooba, that give me hope. I have an appointment with my doctor at the end of the month, I too just switched jobs and now have health insurance again. I've been trying to loose weight, and while it's hard, I've lost 13 so far. a drop in the bucket, but at least it's moving in the right direction. I'm worried about PCOS, but that's one thing I'll explore with the doctor at the end of the month. I know it doesn't make pregancy impossible, just more difficult. I agree about your last comment about food. and I'm trying to watch what goes in to make me healthier overall before we even get pregnant. but it's hard not to get impatient :)
