Born in the sack
Sep 16 2006, 5:55 PM EDT
What does it mean when a baby is born in the sack, my daughter gave birth yesterday and this happened. She was told by the midwife this was very rare and the baby was going to be lucky. Has anyone else exsperienced this or now anything about it or why it happens.

The sack is actually the amniotic sac, the thin membrane inside the uterus that contains amniotic fluid (the "water") and the baby. Occasionally, especially if the birth attendant has not broken the sac, it stays whole and the baby is born with all of or part of it enclosing its body. It is harmless, easily removed and is supposed to be a good luck sign! Take a look at http://www.thedoctorslounge.net/gynecology/procedures/vaginal_delivery.htm for a good explanation.

Hi there,
My mother told me I was born in the sack, and she is Indonesian. Apparantly in Indonesian, it is good luck and there is something very special about the baby. I feel different than others. I don't know what it is though! Congratulations with your baby! :) 5 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

It is also referred to born with a caul.See entry at http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=caul&gwp=13 Under the Wikipedia entry there is a brief discussion of the legend. They were valuable to sailors. 5 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

How was the caul valuable to sailors? I know, I know...I should go read the Wikipedia entry. But it'd be great for all to see quickly, right here, if you're willing! Thanks.

In 1984 I gave birth to twin boys. The first was born head first with no complications. The fluids drained from the sack and it collapsed around the second twin who was coming breech. He was also born with no complications but was born both breech and in the sack. I have never heard of anyone else who has done this but I am sure there are a few out there.

In December 2008 i gave birth to a girl who was born in the sack. My mum was with me during the birth and neither her or the midwives had relised that my waters hadn't broke. Everyone has told me how rare it is and how lucky my child will be. I havn't found much info on this and until then i hadn't heard of this. They told me the sack was square shape and she was just laying in it looking relaxed. My mum said when she was born - OMG they come gift wrapped!!!2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I was born in the amniotic sac. My mother always told me it meant I was lucky. Although I can't complain about my luck, as I'm still alive and in one piece, I can't say I've had much luck any other way. Sorry to burst your bubble.
